PLAB ADVICE
PLAB Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board Test. It is conducted by the General Medical Council (GMC). Its aims are to assess a doctor's ability to work safely and competently in the NHS.
Therefore, if you aim to train for the MRCP, FRCS, MRCOG or GP then you need to pass the PLAB. PLAB consists of two parts:
PART 1: SEE OUR PLAB 1 ONLINE TUTORIAL
This part is based on EMQs (Extended Matching Questions). Altogether you have 200 questions divided into forty themes. Passing score is around 130. There are no negative markings for wrong answers.
We advice that you take the Part 1 in India as it is more tricky than Part 2. Also, courses and books are generally cheaper in India. We recommend you take the Part 1 straight after your final examinations. People do come to UK to do the PLAB 1. However, they find the courses expensive, living costs and if you fail it is stressful. If you have completed Part 1 in India you can concentrate on clinical skills and part 2 in the UK.
If you email us we will provide you with any questions you may have and further details on this scheme. We will generally provide details of recommended courses in India and also recommended books to read in order to pass the Part 1 successfully.
NB: Part 1 is only valid for two years and in order to get your registration with GMC you will need to pass the Part 2 within that period.
PART 2: SEE OUR PLAB 2 ONLINE TUTORIALS AND
‘QUESTION OF THE WEEK’
This is based on clinical assessment. Part 2 consists of OSCE (Objective
Structured Clinical Exam). The exam consists of fourteen booths (skills
stations). They last five minutes each with one minute break in between each
booth. The tests are to assess and observe both clinical and communication
skills. A bell is rung when you have thirty seconds left and this should be used
to complete the station and thank the patient and examiner.
Part 2 can only be done in the UK. Read on to see more details about
courses offered by NHS Recruits. NHS Recruits can offer you to train in
hospitals directly from doctors already working within the NHS. Hence, this can
improve your communication and clinical skills.
NB: Part 2 is valid for five years in order to get registration. You have up
to five years in which to commerce a job.
